My Journey to Yoga
My first experiences with yoga began at a young age, at home with my father. With five young children under his wing, he often needed respite. I’d notice him sneaking off unannounced to retreat into the basement for 20-30 minutes at a time. Curiosity got the best of me and I followed him one day down the stairs and peered around the corner.
There sat my father, in a simple chair, eyes closed, hands on his lap, quietly breathing. Perplexed, I climbed back up the stairs. When I asked him what it was all about, he smiled and said, “meditation”. In the simplest way he could, he explained what the 20 minutes of focused breathing meant. As I demonstrated further interest, he later showed me how to practice on my own. Eventually he began to teach me yoga postures as well, leading me through Sun Salutations in the living room. I wasn’t sure what it all meant, but I knew my father to always be gentle, kind and happy, so I followed suit.
From here, my yoga journey blossomed as I began to watch videos and read books, eventually taking yoga classes in community centers, studios and colleges. In college, I studied dance and movement which continued to feed my enthusiasm for and appreciation of the human body. In 2007, my father took me to hear Deepak Chopra speak on yoga, meditation and spirituality, opening another new world to me.
From that point on, I have explored various methods of asana, including the Iyengar method, Vinyasa and Ashtanga and have continued to maintain a meditation practice. In my eagerness to know more, I began studying intensely at the Awaken Yoga School in 2010, where the seeds of passion for alignment and precision were planted, and in 2011 I earned my certification to teach.
Jessica’s yoga classes are incredibly mindful and deep rooted in all things a yoga class should be: alignment, deep release from stress and your day, tid bits of the history of yoga, and always wonderful hands on assisting. Her massages are just as good, giving the client what they need and what they want to help restore and replenish their physical and mental beings.

It is through teaching yoga that I continue my learning.
My classes are traditional, focused, challenging and rewarding. I am passionate about this process of unfolding, growing and becoming whole through yoga. I am always happy to see both new and familiar faces in class and grateful to have the opportunity to share the practice.
